IRCA has posted an article for parents of kids on the spectrum who are getting ready for the start of a new school year. It begins:

"Anticipating the beginning of the school year can create anxiety for both family members and for their sons/daughters on the autism spectrum. Concerns surround whether your son/daughter will be successful in school and whether the new staff will have a solid understanding of autism spectrum disorders and of your son/daughter. At times, you may know staff and have a good working relationship with them. At other times, staff is unknown and expectations for your son/daughter are unclear. Below are a few tips to help you become a proactive and positive advocate for your son/daughter."

Superflex Takes on One-Sided Sid, Un-Wonderer and the Team of Unthinkables is the fourth comic book in the Superflex series, designed to help children learn more about their own social behavior and strategies to regulate it. Individuals should already be familiar with the Superflex Curriculum before reading this book. In this newest comic, children become familiar with several ways to squash the powers of two, related Unthinkable characters: One-Sided Sid, who gets people to talk only about themselves, and his sidekick sister Un-Wonderer, who likes to keep people from thinking about others. This clever duo tries to get students to do or say things that show they're only thinking about themselves and not others. Students learn helpful strategies to regulate their own behaviors when Sid and his sister invade their thinking.

Thinksheets for teaching social thinking and related skills consists of 250 worksheets specifically designed to offer lessons in teaching social thinking. The worksheets help to create a lesson plan, defining how to break down concepts for students to explore and they can used directly with students. The worksheets can be copied and sent to parents and other professionals to give an idea of what the student is learning and how to carry the concept over in their own environments. Mobile App Monday - Avaz Lite - AAC App for Autism


Avaz Lite is a FREE AAC app for children who are non-verbal, or who have difficulty with speech or language. Avaz has received top international awards, including being on MIT’s list of Top 35 Innovations, and is the subject of a TED talk.

Avaz allows you to create a vocabulary of photographs and voice recordings to help kids create messages. It comes with 3 research-based, graded vocabularies, and a Core Words set that will help a child begin to communicate. These have been designed to facilitate spontaneous novel utterance generation, encouraging a child to use language, and generalize from it.
