Mobile App Monday - Picture Scheduler



Picture Scheduler is a mobile app that allows the user to create common, everyday tasks and organize them. Great for people with disabilities, this app helps those who need visual and/or auditory supports to accomplish their tasks daily. It was created with the help of a professor at Northern Illinois University and can be useful for everyone.

High-Tech Industry a Good Fit for Some

Young adults on the spectrum are finding employment fits in the high-tech industry, according to an article from NPR. For example, the nonPareil Institute in Plano, Texas, is "a combination training program and software company for young adults on the autism spectrum."

Mobile App Monday - DTT Colors



Want to help your child learn the basic colors? This app for teaching colors is fully automated and has been tested with children with autism at The Children's Treatment Center. This app is designed to be very simple with no distracting stimuli because children with autism (and other disorders) are easily distracted. This app is not designed to be a general purpose game, but rather a clinically tested training approach for children with a specific type of learning disability based on Discrete Trial Teaching .

The Reinvention of Edison Thomas



The Reinvention of Edison Thomas is an endearing story about a boy with Asperger's syndrome and a sensory processing disorder who loves science but struggles to understand the social world. Former playmates seem to have outgrown him, and Eddy doesn't notice those who try to become friendly with him. When his entry in the science fair doesn't win, Eddy deals with it the best way he can.

I hate to write!: Tips for Helping Students with Autism Spectrum and Related Disorders



"'I Hate to Write!" is a teacher's guide for helping kids on the spectrum and related disorders with the most problematic areas of writing. The book has "Take it and Use it" worksheets to help students learn writing skills in an easy format. The contents of the book are also aligned with the National Common Core Standards and are appropriate for K-12 and beyond.

News: Number of vaccines not linked to autism

According to an article by NPR, a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is out to reassure parents that getting a lot of vaccines as a young child does not increase the child's risk for developing any of the autism spectrum disorders. The study also finds that the vaccines used today actually have fewer ingredients that have been known to cause reactions.

Mobile App Monday - ABA - Which Does Not Belong?


The principles of ABA and Verbal Behavior (VB) combine to help children determine which item in a group does not belong to it. This app also introduces children to the "negative form “not” which takes some expanded thinking." Over 400 labeled photos are presented without distraction on a white background.
